To continue, let us suggest some different emblematic sites of our city - places that for their cultural, architectural and historical value constitute Cuban Cultural Heritage - that we believe would be of interest to our esteemed visitors. You can visit:

The beautiful University of Havana:

On the 5th of January 1728, in the convent of San Juan de Letrán, the first university of Cuba was born, the Royal and Papal University of Saint Geronimo of Havana. In the act of inauguration Brother Tomás Linares of Castillo was named as the first rector, who from that moment put into force the first faculties: Arts and Philosophy, Theology, Canons, Law and Medicine.

Throughout these years this great architectural and cultural work has formed and nurtured different generations of students and professors from all over the world. This same place has been the hub of great Cuban educators such as: Enrique José Varona, Luis de Soto, Mirta Aguirre, Hortensia Pichardo and an assembly of Cuban teachers that for the length of the 280 years of the life of the University have offered their knowledge for the benefit of new generations.

These days the University of Havana possesses a roll of 60,000 students distributed across its 17 faculties and 15 municipal outposts. In this current teaching period a total of 32 different courses are studied. Go visit! There is a memorable time to be spent surrounded by students in a harmonious and youthful environment. You can find it located on the apex of the streets San Lázaro and L en Vedado.

Hotel Nacional de Cuba (National Hotel)

Towards the end of the second decade of the 20th century it was decided to begin construction of a luxury hotel in our country. The American firms Mc Kim, Mead & White and Purdy Henderson Co., entrusted with the plans and the execution, finished the majestic building in 14 months. The hotel shows an eclectic style in its architecture, present are Art Deco, Arabic influences, characteristics of Hispano-Moorish architecture, Neoclassical and Neo-colonial, to the point that it has details of Californian influence from centuries before. All of this has served to make the hotel the most interesting and exceptional in the Caribbean region as regards displaying such a wealth of architectural influences.

As of 1994 the National Hotel of Cuba has been considered the Hotel Insignia of the Greater Caribbean Hotel Group. We recommend that you visit this building, where we are sure you will spend a very enjoyable time. From the heights of this beautiful institution you can take some of the best photos of the city of Havana, bordered by the Malecón which lends an artistic flair to our Havana. You can find the hotel situated on O Street, between 23 and 21 in Vedado.

The Coppelia Ice-creamery:

In 1966 an international event was celebrated in the neighbouring hotel of Habana Libre and it was decided to convert the recreation area into a quieter and more family friendly space.

With this in mind they came up with the idea to build a giant ice-creamery for the enjoyment of the Cuban community and all of its visitors. This place has hosted various generations at all hours of the day and night from that time until today. It has been a centre for friends to gather, for romantic trysts and why not? It has been and will continue to be a place where many people have met for the first time and have gone on to become a beautiful family.

Coppelia is famous for the exclusive flavour of its ice-creams, for its great dynamism, for that we suggest that you pay it a visit. From this point you will be in one of the most central areas of the capital and you can visit other cultural and recreational sites that can be found on 23 street, La Rampa.
